Join EncoreEast at DanceEast’s Summer Intensive

This 2-day intensive for people over the age of 50 offers a rare opportunity to get inside the choreography of two of the Companies appearing in DanceEast’s Autumn season. I don’t know what the specific content of the workshops will be but having seen both companies and taken part in previous workshops with them, I am very excited.

Both workshops will be taught by dancers from the Companies. I love learning from dancers who have experienced the process of devising or learning the work. Their generosity in sharing the thinking behind the work and the challenges they have lived through brings it to life. It makes them inspiring teachers and adds a sprinkle of magic to my experience of the workshops.

Working with dancers creates a special connection to seeing the work too. The connection works at an intellectual level by having a deeper understanding of the themes and concerns of the work. Trying some of the moves fires those mirror neurons that make us feel we are actually dancing what we are watching. The emotional bond with the dancers turns me from audience member to fan.

The prospect of two full, consecutive days of dancing might seem daunting. EncoreEast certainly felt nervous when Edd Arnold and Alethia Antonia of Russell Maliphant Dance Company proposed a series of 2-day intensives to create Focus. Now we work that way through choice! It allows time to absorb and process new ideas, to experiment and learn, to become immersed in the artistic process and to get to know each other. Only a couple of weeks to wait for the Summer Intensive – I am so looking forward to it.
